Helpful Tips for Finding a Student House After Living in Halls

Moving out of halls and into your first student house is an exciting step — a bit more freedom, a bit more responsibility, and (hopefully) a lot more space! But with so many options around Chester, it can be tricky to know where to start. Here are a few helpful tips to make your house-hunting journey smoother.

1. Start Your Search Early

Good houses in Chester go quickly, especially those close to the University of Chester campuses or the city centre. Start when houses get released for the next year to give yourself plenty of time to view properties and make a decision without rushing.

2. Set a Realistic Budget

Remember, it’s not just about rent. Some student landlords don’t include bills (we do at Hoots!). Therefore, you need to factor in bills like gas, electricity, water, Wi-Fi, and any council tax exemptions you may qualify for as a full-time student. Some houses (like us) are “bills included,” which can make budgeting easier.

3. Choose the Right Housemates

You might love your friends, but living together is a whole new experience! Make sure you’re choosing housemates with similar lifestyles, cleaning habits, and expectations. It’ll make your time together much more enjoyable.

4. Check the Location

Chester’s a compact city, but small differences in location can make a big impact. Being near campus or in areas like Garden Lane, Hoole, or the city centre can make walking to lectures and social events much easier. Think about transport links, nearby shops, and even where you’ll do your food shop.

5. Always View Before You Sign

Photos online don’t always tell the full story. Viewing the property in person gives you a chance to check the condition and make sure you are happy with the rooms.

6. Read the Contract Carefully

It’s easy to get excited once you’ve found “the one,” but don’t rush the paperwork. Check the tenancy length, deposit details, and any clauses about repairs or cleaning before signing. If you’re unsure, ask your Students’ Union for advice.

Finding your first student house in Chester can be a fun and rewarding experience, just plan ahead, stay organised, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Before you know it, you’ll be settled into your new home, ready to enjoy another great year in this beautiful city.
